Layat, Christine, 33, and a very fine beader. She was widowed ten years ago when the rebel forces entered her village and abducted and then killed her husband. She has three children of her own, Stella 15, Agnes 13, and Scovia, l. She also mothers two AIDS orphans Ivan, 9 and Janet 7. Janet has always been sickly and is in need of an HIV test.

Christine estimates that several times a week the family can only afford to eat one meal a day. She works in the rock quarry during the day and makes beads by candle light at night. Christine's dream is to someday build a small house in her village. In the meantime she is using her bead money to buy food and pay for school fees.
