Dear ONE Member,

We’ve recently returned from trips to Senegal, Ghana, Mozambique, Kenya and South Africa, where we saw first-hand the role African mothers play in the health and education of their children. In honor of Mother’s Day on May 9, we’re coming together again to support “Six-Word Memoirs” on why moms matter. We’d like you to join us.

Read Six-Word Memoirs on why moms matter from other ONE members, and write your own here:

The Six-Word Memoir is a new literary style championed by SMITH Magazine and inspired by Ernest Hemingway’s original story of just six words: “For sale: baby shoes, never worn.”

Your six words can be personal, about your own mother. Or they can be about why mothers matter in the world. You can go any direction your heart and imagination take you, so long as you keep it to just six words.

Show your support for mothers by writing your Six-Word Memoir here:

The mothers we met in Africa have difficult lives, but they showed us exactly why moms matter. Healthy mothers are more likely to have healthy children, and educated mothers are 50% more likely to have their children immunized against deadly diseases.

But the impact of mothers is greater than mere statistics can convey. We need to be able to explain it, succinctly and powerfully, in order for people to understand. Won’t you try writing just six words to help us raise awareness on why you think moms matter?

We can’t wait to read what you come up with.

Thank you,
