Alaba Katy is 22 years old, a hardworking and determined lady who endured all situations to achieve her dream of being a caterer in order to own a small restaurant one day. Born fifth in a family of seven children, she is the only one educated above primary school.
Katy’s father died when she was very young and the poor mother could not afford to fend for the seven children. As a result Katy used to do odd jobs such as serving food or washing plates in local restaurants to get money to buy school books or personal belongings. Her elder sister got married at 16 years old, and she and her husband helped support the family. In hind sight, Katy realized that working as a child helped her to become financially independent and learn the skills that help her today.
From her work, Katy was able to pay school fees for her primary and secondary education. Unfortunately the sister’s husband died while Katy was in senior five and she was forced to drop out of school. BeadforLife met her shortly thereafter, and enrolled her in a catering course. Not content to wait for graduation, Katy has started a small business supplying milk, sodas, water, donuts, and a few other supplies. She spends all of her free time there, and studies hard the rest of the time.
Her dream is to open a large and popular restaurant so that she can support her mother and educate her younger siblings, so they have opportunities she never had.
