Lauren Zuniga

In the next few weeks, BeadforLife will be partnering with one of the hottest names in female slam poetry, Lauren Zuniga. Females in the male-dominated slam realm share the same desire as BeadforLife—to empower women. Using their words as a platform, these poets portray the harsh reality of gender inequality in a way that stirs emotion.

Currently based in Oklahoma City, OK, Lauren is a nationally touring poet and the founder of Oklahoma Young Writers. She has spoken and performed at the OKC edition of the Tedx conferences, and was nominated for State Poet Laureate of Oklahoma. We are excited to work with Lauren to bring awareness of our work to empower women to new mediums, and to bring awareness of Lauren to our BeadCircle. Lauren will be performing on February 24th at the University of Oklahoma, and on February 26th in Oklahoma City at Urban Roots. Read Lauren’s article “Girls—and Women—Are Slamming the Poetry Scene” and then watch her perform her most popular poem Girl:Exploded

Along with Lauren, BeadforLife will also be working with the 2012 Women of the World Poetry Slam (WOWPS) in Denver, Colorado. WOWPS is a weekend-long event designed to give a larger voice to women in the slam community. Though the national competition for poetry slam is open to all, the WOWPS caters directly to women. In addition to hosting a national slam competition, WOWPS also holds writing workshops and other events for female poets and their fans. For more information on the event, visit their Facebook page. You can also learn more about the nationally renowned poet, Suzi Q. Smith, who is running the event. BeadforLife will be hosting a table at the opening ceremony on March 7th at the Mercury Café. If you are in the Denver-metro area, come visit the BeadforLife table and check out all the great events occurring with Women of the World Poetry Slam throughout the city.
