The perfect gift for a girl or teacher in your life.
Our Girls Education Program empowers the next generation of Ugandan women by sponsoring bright but impoverished girls in the rural areas of Otuke and Iganga. Meet Lucy Oyella!
BeadforLife met Lucy in 2005 when she was living in Namuwongo, a large slum in Kampala that’s home to many poor refugees. A sweet and humble girl, Lucy lost her mother to a rare disease at a young age. Just two years later, her father was killed by Joseph Kony's Army, leaving her orphaned. She and her sister Irene were then adopted by her Uncle Walter, who was desperate to save his family and found shelter in a dilapidated one-room house. He could not afford two meals a day, let alone school fees for the children.
It's been eight bittersweet years for Lucy since she was selected for a BeadforLife scholarship. Though she lives in dire poverty, Lucy counts her blessings. "I would be married by now if not for BeadforLife," she says. Responsible, punctual and a hard working student, Lucy earned admission to a reputable secondary school, Bishop Cypriano Kihangire, where she is now in her second year. She dreams of becoming a doctor, and studies hard to reach this goal.
