Preparing for Your Spotlight BeadParty
There are many different ways to host an interesting and successful BeadParty. We’ve created some steps to follow to prepare for your Spotlight BeadParty, which will likely be different from any BeadParty you have previously attended or hosted. This gathering is meant to spark discussion and reflection. We’ve also included a 2 hour sample agenda, however, you should certainly tailor it to suit the needs and interests of your group.
- Prepare yourself to educate others on the subject of Women’s Empowerment by reviewing the information in the Toolbox and Additional Resources sections of this website. Here you will find biographies of empowered women and girls, along with a variety of short video clips and articles. We strove to find educational pieces that explained the issues succinctly.
-
Decide which of these pieces you’d like to use at your BeadParty. Think about whether you’d like the group to do an interactive activity and gather the appropriate supplies. If you’d like to have a discussion about a particular article, send your guests an e-mail with a link to that article two weeks in advance. If you have determined your agenda, feel free to send that along too, so that guests will know what to expect.
- Identify the equipment you need to show videos, i.e. a computer or laptop. Better yet, are you able to stream videos onto your TV directly from your computer?
- You will also want to take time to show the regular BeadforLife DVD (updated, May 2011) that comes in your BeadParty box, regardless of whether this is your first BeadParty.
- Use the words that come from your heart to explain to your guests why this subject is important to you and why you have chosen to have this BeadParty. Allow guests to also tell the group why they came and what they hope to learn.
-
After your BeadParty, follow up with a thank you e-mail to your guests, directing them back to this website and its resources. There are many more things to read and watch than you’ll have time for at the BeadParty, including a “Take Action” section that your guests will find helpful when they leave your party wondering: “what can I do now?”
Sample Agenda
There are so many ways to approach your Spotlight BeadParty, depending on the number of people who will be attending and the specific materials you’re interested in. It’s better to pick a few topics and discuss them thoroughly than to try to cover too much. If you send your guests a link to this website afterward, they can continue to explore the topic on their own. Of course, you will want to leave plenty of time for bead and shea shopping!
Here’s one idea for a two-hour agenda. You can adapt it easily to include the short videos and articles/book chapters that you’d like to focus on with your guests.
